They had been carefully and comprehensively indoctrinated with the idea that white Britons were fundamentally racist, and that this was one of the worst, if not the very worst, thing that someone could be. When confronted with the duty of apprehending criminals who were overwhelmingly members of a prominent racial minority, these officials could all too clearly see the prospect of the end of their careers and public disgrace. |
