Oil TuesdayIt’s all pretty much related to energy—oil, natural gas.  The petrodollar machine may have just stopped. The attack on Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline isn’t only an oil story. Philip Pilkington argues it could become a U.S. Treasury story. The basic petrodollar loop was beautifully simple: Gulf states sold enormous amounts of oil, accumulated dollars, then recycled part of those surpluses into U.S. assets. But Pilkington says that flow has effectively stopped. “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘰𝘧𝘧 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘳.” With Saudi export routes increasingly constrained, the Gulf isn’t generating anything like the same stream of surplus oil dollars to recycle into Treasuries. And the nastier part comes next. Gulf states still hold huge stocks of dollar assets. But if oil revenues remain impaired while imports continue, Pilkington says they may eventually have to sell some of those assets to defend their dollar pegs and support their economies. So the direction of travel potentially reverses: Instead of Gulf oil revenues creating demand for U.S. Treasuries, an energy crisis could eventually turn Gulf reserves into additional Treasury supply. And this is happening just as the 10-year yield is testing the psychologically important 5% level. Pilkington’s conclusion is unusually stark: “𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦.” The pipeline carried oil west. The financial consequences may travel in the opposite direction. |
