The reason it can’t infect bats is because of twelve nucleotides inserted into the viral genome, to create something called a “furin cleavage” site. The Moroccan men are not invading Spain proper, across the Strait of Gibraltar, but the little enclave of Ceuta on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco. This mass mobilization is an echo of the 1975 "Green March," when the King of Morocco mobilized 100s of thousands to march into Spanish-controlled Western Sahara, daring the Spanish army to fire upon them. They did not, Spain left, and this territory is now under Moroccan control, although this is disputed by rebel factions. The real story is this: Will Spain use violent military force to evict tens of thousands of Moroccan men from Ceuta, or just haul down the Spanish flag and leave, they way they left Western Sahara in 1975-76. At this point, Ceuta and Mellina may be more trouble than they are worth. Being official Spanish territory, anyone making it into these enclaves is able to claim asylum, and play the woke and liberal Spanish legal system almost indefinitely, while demanding to be fed and housed. | ||
